Reading the short article on “re-viewing” visual literacy allowed me to look at this era of overflowing visual information in a new perspective. As the article refers to this era as the “bain d’ images” era, we live in a society filled with visual communication through technology. However, as one living in this era, having an excess of visual images feels natural, causing us not to think too critically about them. The article expresses that “the majority of people, however, being constantly bombarded by images does not necessarily lead to a conscious recognition…”, which is certainly true to a point. If increase in visual access correlates with increase in visual intelligence, all of the younger generation would be extremely sharp. Yet, this is not the case since “Living in an image-rich world…does not mean students…naturally possess sophisticated visual literacy skills…”, like the listening to an iPod situation. The easy access to social media and other types of images had pros, but also cons affecting the way we view and analyze data. With a developing modern society, new mindsets and training are necessary for better understanding of that data. Therefore, I agree with the idea that reinforced educational applications are essential for new learning outcomes for students. These new learning outcomes will also help students in many ways that the old, left-brain-focused teaching styles could not. I feel it is important to be able to use both the logical sense and the creative to comprehend, create, and be critical. The article overall touched ideas of visual literacy—its definition, change amongst society, and re-view window—which raised points to think about our era of images and helped learn the new digital perspective.
