Artist Statement
While filming videos and animating illustrations, I did have fun trying new skills and creating a story. The story did not change much from my original storyboard, and it definitely helped making a storyboard in the planning process because I had a reference to work with. My final project was based on the Ghibli movie Totoro, and the theme was focused on a door that switches realities. Everyone has a world or imagination they like to dive into, and in my project, that was the world of Totoro for my main character (my roommate). I feel like I, in a sense, successfully portrayed this idea in my final project, and incorporated nicely made animations with the filmed videos. I also think the video itself was very fun to watch. I was just less satisfied with some scenes where I do admit could have been done better with more time, like the sketching scene. It played on its own in regards to the whole video. Another part would be just the smaller details, matching the overall likeness of visuals and drawing methods would make it look nicer. One thing I would do differently next time is having a more thorough plan or thinking the whole picture ahead. That would make the process of making the videos less stressful. However, I am still proud of my outcome and like the transitions I’ve put in, plus the animation ideas. Overall, it was a hard, but fun project, and I hope others will be able to enjoy the video when they watch it too.
