Project 2: Soundscape

Updated: Oct 12, 2023

Title REM

Artist Statement

Out of the bundles of jumbled ideas I had initially, the one idea I developed and chose as my final theme was dream. The title of my soundscape is REM, as in REM phase of sleep because that is where the dreams occur. I thought it would be a nice experience to create the phases of a deep sleep dream as my first product using Adobe Audition. Starting with quieter, more calm ambience noises, I wanted to represent the first step in falling asleep and being aware of the white noises around the room. Then, after falling asleep, you would start to explore your subconscious. Sometimes I remember there would be times where the most random scenes of events occur in a dream and just switch from scene to scene as if swiping through a screen. Which is why the sounds may sound random and very unrelated from one to the other. Throughout the dream, it would lead upper and upper to the peak, the climatic point, where it’s the most dramatic, chaotic, and confusing. That way, it can create an impact when there is a knock on the door silencing all these events in the dream, and the alarm rings, waking us up. I would say it was difficult to express this whole sensation the way I wanted to, and some effects didn’t end up the way I wanted them to. I definitely learned in the process, though, the general functions of audition, and because this project was so lightweight and not too complicated, I had a lot of fun with it. Overall, I feel like the soundscape had a very ambivalent expression, where the theme could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. Communicating better is one thing I can focus on for next time. On the other hand, the transitioning from one space to another seemed to work in an effective way. Now I know better how to use sounds as a mode of communication, and I would like to put more effort into expressing ideas with sounds in a visually intriguing way.
