Distorted Portraits

Artist Statement

Distorting original portraits in ways they would not normally created interesting perspectives on how the face can change. Not intended to go as crazy as it turned out, playing with the different methods of glitching was unstoppable. The final curated piece displays a sort of youthful, playful colors with hybrid distortions that the original images are almost unidentifiable. However, I feel like that created a distinction for the images, that when put together, created a sort of synergy. The idea that I wanted to put down on the images was if simply thinking, distorted portraits, and if diving a bit more complex, the contradiction amongst the subject and their distortions, emphasizing how one does not have to be either one character or another.

Overall, since this area of glitching was a whole new learning experience for me, I thought it was fun, but also a little frustrating at times when the glitches were unpredictable when making. I especially enjoyed using Audacity. The colors, shifting, and distorting the sound waves of an image all made it my favorite. However, all the other applications were nice, and they each created a different feeling in their outcomes. On another note, I feel like I could have done a smoother job on the final curating piece by taking out the infinite loop video, and if I was going to add the subtler images, maybe add more to create a contrasting body against the colorful ones. In summary, that was my path and line of thought throughout this project, and I am glad with the resulting collection of weirdly glitched images.
